Women's basketball falls to No. 2 Amherst

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball team fell in an early hole and never recovered as it fell 79-62 to second-ranked Amherst on Wednesday. The Panthers (3-6) won the turnover battle but could never erase the early deficit.

Amherst (9-0) opened up the game on a 7-0 run and went on to take a 20-6 advantage after the first quarter. Chapman cut into the deficit with a 19-15 advantage in the second quarter but Amherst pushed its lead to 20 points in the third quarter and held off Chapman for the win.

Sophomore Jaryn Fajardo scored a career-best 19 points to go along with a pair of rebounds, three assists and three steals while only turning the ball over once. Senior Megan Charles pitched in 13 points.

Amherst shot 54.1 percent for the game but Chapman forced 23 turnovers from Division III's second-ranked team while only having 15 turnovers. Emma McCarthy's 19 points and eight rebounds helped push Amherst out in front as did Ali Doswell's game-high 21 points.

The Panthers will wrap up their nonconference schedule on Friday with SUNY Oneonta on Friday at 3 p.m. in the first game of a Chapman basketball doubleheader.
