Munoz notches double-double in win over La Verne

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Irma Munoz produced her second double-double of her career in the Chapman University women's basketball team come-from-behind 79-58 victory over La Verne on Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Center.

Munoz, who had 12 points, 10 rebounds and one steal, grabbed three of her boards during the Panthers comeback stretch in the third period. Two offensive rebounds led to a pair of key jumpers which helped the Panthers tie the game 40-40 with 6:42 left in the third. Chapman took the lead 44-42 with 5:42 left on the clock off a fast break layup from Lauren Sato and then never lost it.

Leading 54-50 at the end of the third, the Panthers capped off the night with an 18-4 run spanning over six minutes of the fourth period to carry onto a 72-56 lead. Senior Megan Charles scored eight of her 21 points in the fourth period.

Chapman forced 27 turnovers and scored 32 points off of turnovers to earn the come-back win. Sato contributed 16 points and sophomore Jaryn Fajardo helped with 15 points, seven assists and five steals.

La Verne earned its largest lead of the game, nine points, in the first period when Faye Osburn hit back to back triples for the Leopards. Osburn also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards for La Verne.

The Panthers (5-6 overall, 2-0 SCIAC) will host Redlands on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at home before hitting the road for a pair of SCIAC games.
