Win streak extends to six games for women's basketball

ORANGE, Calif. – The entire roster pitched in as the Chapman University women's basketball team defeated visiting Pomona-Pitzer 80-56 for its sixth win in a row. Senior Lauren Sato led the Panthers (13-8, 10-2 SCIAC) with 16 points but the bench scored 33 points in the big victory.

Eleven different players scored at least two points for the first-place Panthers in the wire-to-wire win. Sato led everyone with 16 points but was the only starter in double figures. Both freshman Eleni Giotinis and junior Jaime Hum-Nishikado scored 10 points off the bench to fuel the bench effort. Giotinis added six rebounds as Chapman outrebounded the Sagehens 45-24.

Every starter scored at least six points in the complete team effort. Senior Megan Charles had six points with six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Jaryn Fajardo continued to flirt with a triple-double as she scored eight points on 3-for-3 shooting, pulled down eight boards and dished out six assists. Freshman Lucy Criswell had eight points with three blocks while fellow freshman Ryann Garcia scored nine points with four rebounds.

Chapman scored the first seven points of the game and never let the Sagehens pull even to cruise to the big win. He initial 7-0 lead was cut to two but Chapman ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run to go up 23-13 after the first 10 minutes. The Sagehens managed just six points in the second quarter as the lead ballooned to 44-19.

The lead grew to as much as 33 points in the third before Pomona-Pitzer caught fire behind the arc in the fourth. Pomona-Pitzer drained 5-of-9 threes in the quarter to cut down on the deficit. Alaina Woo scored five of her team-leading 11 points in the quarter.

Chapman goes for its seventh win in a row on Saturday when it hosts Caltech at 2 p.m.
