Women's basketball back on winning track over Oxy

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball ended a brief two-game slide with a 69-60 win over visiting Occidental on Wednesday. A double-double from senior Lucy Criswell and a 20-point night from sophomore Julianna Campas led the Panthers (10-9, 6-4 SCIAC) in the win.

Criswell finished the game with 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and a pair of blocks. Campas sunk 3-of-6 three-point attempts and led the Panthers with 20 points Sophomore Madison Shigeta dished out five assists to go along with four rebounds and six points. Senior Marissa Dunn returned from an injury and scored eight points off the bench.

After some back-and-forth over the first four minutes of the game, Chapman went on a quick 7-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. Occidental answered with a three from Raveena Dhiman but Criswell answered with a three for Chapman and Campas followed with an easy lay in to push the lead to six.

The Panthers never relinquished the lead but Occidental continued to trade runs to stay in the game. The Panthers started to pull away in the second quarter when they held the Tigers scoreless over the final 4:23. Oxy had pulled within four at 32-28 but Chapman scored the final six points of the half to push the lead into double digits.

The lead reached as much as 15 points in the fourth quarter when Dunn got to the rim for a layup. Oxy made a quick 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 10 but could never get any closer than eight points down the stretch as Chapman had a response to every Oxy run.

The Panthers next head to Pomona-Pitzer for the second game of a Chapman-Pomona-Pitzer doubleheader and return home on Feb. 8 to take on Whittier at 4 p.m.
