Fourteen first-half goals pace women's LAX over Morrisville

ORANGE, Calif. – A women's lacrosse offense that entered Friday night averaging over 13 goals per game scored more than that in the first half and Chapman University cruised to a 17-7 win over visiting Morrisville State College (N.Y.) in non-conference action at Wilson Field.

The Panthers jumped out to a 14-2 halftime lead, at one point scoring eight consecutive goals. They made the lead stand in the second half, improving to 4-1 to being the season. The 17 goals are the most scored by Chapman in a game this year.

Freshman M Kelsey Mackin got the Panthers on the board just 2:11 into the game and would score two more times before the half was over to lead Chapman with a game-high three goals. Two of those goals came during an 8-0 Chapman run over a span of 16:23 off the clock midway through the first half.

In the second half, Morrisville State (0-1) scored four of the first five goals to cut Chapman's lead back to single digits with 6:51 remaining, but couldn't get any closer.

Seven different players scored at least two goals for Chapman including team scoring leader junior M Victoria Wilkinson who scored a pair and added two helpers to run her season points total to 20. Sophomore A Abbey Messmer also earned four points (two goals, two assists) for the Panthers.

Senior G Anjali Thota (2-1) started in the net, making four saves and allowing just two first-half goals to earn her second victory of the season.

Friday's was the first of four straight home games for Chapman, which plays eight of its next nine at Wilson Field. The Panthers will host SCIAC opponent Occidental College next on March 1 at 7 p.m.
