Offensive-minded Panthers beat King's 23-9

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team produced its highest offensive output of the season and cruised to a 23-9 win over visiting King's College (Pa.) at Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon. Eight different Panthers scored multiple times and 12 players in all tallied goals in the win.

Chapman (5-2) broke open a one-goal game with four straight goals in a 50 second span late in the first half. The Panthers capitalized on quick transitions after winning four straight draw to score fast goals. Freshman M Kelsey Mackin won two of those draw controls setting up her own score at 10:32 in the first half to give Chapman a 5-2 lead. The other led to an 8-meter goal by sophomore A Abbey Messmer to make it 7-2.

The Panthers won the game thanks to a sizeable advantage in draw controls, winning 22 of the 34 draws which led to a lopsided advantage in shots (39-24) as well. Junior M Lauren Mah led all players with nine draw controls.

Chapman finished the half scoring eight of the final nine goals over the final 10:38 to build an 11-3 advantage at the intermission. Freshman A Hayden Stein scored three of her game-high four goals in the period to lead Chapman offensively.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to take advantage of scoring opportunities, scoring six straight goals late to gain their biggest lead of the game at 23-8 with 1:35 remaining. Mackin scored twice more in the half and Stein, as well as junior A Delaine DeBeer each finished with three assists on the day.

Senior G Anjali Thota made nine saves to improve to 3-2 this season in goal.

Sophomore M Mariah Masciarelli led King's (2-1) with four goals as the Monarchs suffered their first loss of the season.

Chapman improved to 3-2 at Wilson Field and will host Berry College (Ga.) on Thursday in an 11:30 a.m. matinee.
