'Senior Night' win earns lacrosse a home playoff game

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team finished the regular season on a high note, defeating visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 13-4 at Wilson Field on Saturday night. With the win, the Panthers clinched home-field advantage in the first round of the SCIAC Championships, which begin on Wednesday.

Chapman (5-10 overall, 3-7 SCIAC) secured the No. 4 seed and will host the same Claremont (9-8 overall, 2-8 SCIAC) squad in the No. 5 seed at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Wilson Field. The winner will earn the right travel to No. 1 seed Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

The Panthers won the possession battle and kept Claremont off the scoreboard for nearly the entire first half as they built a 4-1 lead at halftime. Sophomore A Kylee Moore scored three of her game-high four goals in the first half to lead Chapman offensively.

In the second half, Chapman was more aggressive on the attack, scoring four times in the first 10 minutes to take an 8-1 lead and never looked back. Freshman M Tessa Oliaro scored a pair of goals in the period as did senior D Catherine LaPlant, who doubled her season scoring total to four. Oliaro added two assists as well.

Senior GK Kara Podesta made six saves for the victory in goal on 'Senior Night' as she, LaPlant, A Allie Kontny and D Kelly Clarke were honored in a ceremony prior to their final regular season home games.
