Women's lacrosse holds off Drew to continue hot start

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead and held off Drew University late for a 15-10 win on Tuesday on Wilson Field. The Panthers (5-1) had a hat trick of hat tricks with three players scoring three goals in the match.

Senior Brooke Martini, junior Gretchen Rodenberger and senior Kelsey Mackin all found the back of the net three times in the match. Two of Rodenberger's goals came just 30 seconds apart in the first half to help the home team sprint away early in the match. She also added two assists, a ground ball and a draw control to her stat line.

Martini had five draw controls to go along with her hat trick as well as an assist.

The Panther lead reached its greatest point with 5:51 left in the first half when Rodenberger's third goal put Chapman up 9-2. Drew scored the final two goals of the half to cut into the lead, including Madie Spiess's third goal of the match. She had five goals to lead the Rangers offensively.

The visitors stayed on a run in the second half, chipping away at Chapman's lead. With 11:43 left, Morgan Mason scored for Drew to cut the once seven-goal deficit down to just three at 12-9. The teams traded the next two goals before Chapman took control of the pace over the final seven minutes, limiting Drew's opportunities and scoring two insurance goals.
