Women's lacrosse matches program-best with fifth win in a row

ORANGE, Calif. – The win streak reached five matches for the Chapman University women's lacrosse team with a 13-6 win over visiting Whittier on Saturday on Wilson Field. The Panthers' five-match win streak equals the program record for wins in a row.

Sophomore Stacey Zuppa scored four goals to lead the Panthers to another dominating win in which they never trailed. Zuppa scored three of her goals in the first 13:13 of the match to help the Panthers jump out to a 5-0 lead. Whittier didn't find the back of the net until there was just over 11 minutes in the half to cut the lead to 6-1 and that would be as close as the Poets would get the rest of the way.

Senior Brooke Martini added in yet another hat trick – her sixth of the season – to run her school record goals scored total to 99. With her next goal, she'll be the first Panther to reach triple digits. She scored twice in the later parts of the first half to help Chapman build a 9-1 lead at the half.

Senior Kelsey Mackin also scored two late first half goals and assisted on Martini's third goal in the second half. Whittier scored three of the first five goals of the second half to cut the lead to 11-4 but goals from Ana Kalyta and Martini pushed the lead back to nine.

The Poets snuck two more goals in late but Chapman was able to maintain possession to slow down the Poet attack and secure the win. The Panthers held a 12-8 advantage in draw controls and outshot the Poets 33-12 while also forcing 19 turnovers.

Chapman maintained its slight lead on Pomona-Pitzer for first place in the SCIAC with just three matches to go. The Panthers head to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday for their next match. The final home match of the season will be April 20 when the Panthers and Pomona-Pitzer meet under the Wilson Field lights at 7 p.m.
