Women's lacrosse lands program-record seven on All-SCIAC teams

ORANGE, Calif. –The Chapman University women's lacrosse team had a program-record seven players selected to the All-SCIAC teams, the conference announced on Wednesday. Senior Brooke Martini, juniors Dillan Watts, Tara Sonnemaker, Gretchen Rodenberger and sophomore Stacey Zuppa headlined the first team. Senior pair Alessandra Porfido and Kelsey Mackin each earned second team honors. 

Martini earned All-SCIAC First Team honors for the third consecutive year, ranking fifth in the conference with 26 goals. The senior led the SCIAC with 14 free-position goals and ranked in the top-10 in the conference with 22 draw controls. Martini became the first player in Chapman history to score 100 career goals and will graduate as the all-time leading scorer amongst other school records.

AN offensive powerhouse, Rodenberger landed on the All-SCIAC First Team for the second year in a row, ranking second in the SCIAC with 29 goals this season. The junior also ranked third in the conference with 37 points. She had a career-year on the attack, leading the Panthers in goals scored and points. She also surpassed 100 career goals this season.

Zuppa earned first team honors in her first season at Chapman after leading the Panthers with nine assists and ranking third in the conference with 27 goals. Zuppa also ranked third in the conference with 40 draw controls while her 36 points in SCIAC matches ranked fifth.

Defensive leader Watts started and played in all 18 games for the Panthers, ranking fifth in the conference with 18 caused turnovers. The junior recorded a career-high 42 ground balls this season and won 14 draw controls.

Goalkeeper Sonnemaker landed SCIAC honors for the first time in her career after leading the Panthers to the most wins in school history. The played every minute in goal on the way to the school record of 15 wins overall and 10 in the SCIAC. She ranked fifth in the conference with 79 saves. Sonnemaker became the winningest goalie in CU history with 23 career wins, including 10 SCIAC wins this season. 

Porfido, the second defender recognized, started and played all 19 games for the Panthers on the way to second team honors. She recorded 23 ground balls, won seven draw controls and forced seven caused turnovers. She helped the Panthers to the third-lowest goals against average in the SCIAC.

Mackin, a second team midfielder, ranked second in the conference in making 65.5 percent of the shots she took. She was also the only player in the SCIAC to put at least 10 shots on goal and make over 93 percent of them. Mackin scored 34 goals this season, won 12 draw controls and forced 17 turnovers.

The seven Panthers will lead Chapman into the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer will meet for the fourth time this season on Sunday, May 15 for a 4 p.m. match.
