Women's lacrosse falls to CMS in SCIAC title match

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior Danielle Zahn scored a hat trick but the Chapman University women's lacrosse team fell 18-9 in the SCIAC Tournament title match. The Panthers made their second consecutive appearance in the tournament finale.

Zahn scored three goals while junior Stacey Zuppa scored two with two assists. Senior Kelsey Mackin also scored a goal and came up with four draw controls. Sophomore Becka Wachtel also scored a pair of goals to help lead the Panthers.

The Panthers kept pace with the top-seeded Athenas over the first 15 minutes as the teams traded the first four goals. The Athenas scored back-to-back goals to make it 4-2 and led the rest of the way. Zahn's goal with 2:27 left in the half made it 6-4 and the Panthers trailed by just three at 7-4 heading into halftime.

Senior Tara Sonnemaker made six of her 10 saves in the first half to help keep the Panthers in it. However, CMS broke away in the second half, going up 10-5 in the first seven minutes of the second half. The Athenas steadily built the lead to as much as 10 goals in the second half and Zahn hit a free position shot as time expired to make it an 18-9 final.

Emily Cohen led the Athenas with five goals and Corie Hack added in four.

The Panthers end their season with an 11-7 record and were ranked third in the West in the latest NCAA regional rankings.
