Women's lacrosse rallies late but falls to Springfield

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-6 loss to the visiting Springfield College Pride on Sunday. Freshman Taylor Hextrum made 13 saves in goal for the Panthers.

The Panthers (0-6) kept pace with the Pride (4-1) over the first few minutes, trading the first four goals. After Springfield went up three minutes in, sophomore Alexandra Callaway brought Chapman even. Senior Stacey Zuppa found Callaway with a perfect pass that led to the quick goal.

The Pride went back up but the Panthers had an answer again. This time, sophomore Danelle Lucero batted in a perfectly placed pass from fellow sophomore Michaela Lopez.

Springfield's Shelby Corsano scored the first of her three goals with 19:35 left and sparked a 10-0 run for the visitors that spanned 36 minutes. Springfield took an 8-2 lead into halftime and continued to pull away over the first 15 minutes of the second half. Senior Kristen Steidler led the Pride with four goals.

Lucero's second goal of the afternoon finally brought an end to the lengthy scoring drought and kick started a small run for the Panthers to end the game. After the midway point of the second half, the Panthers went on to outscore Springfield 4-1. Lopez bounced in a goal from distance and Callaway scored her second goal on a free position shot. Zuppa battled through contact for the last goal of the match.

Sophomore Haley Reinhard caused five turnovers and came up with six groundballs to lead the defense in front of Hextrum.

The Panthers are back home on Thursday at 7 p.m. to take on Stevenson.
