Women's lacrosse picks up first SCIAC win

ORANGE, Calif. – An offensive outburst led the Chapman University women's lacrosse team to a 21-8 win over visiting Whittier College on Saturday. Eleven different Panthers joined in the scoring action as Chapman picked up its first SCIAC win.

Senior Stacey Zuppa led the attack with four goals on the day while sophomores Leah Donnelly and Danelle Lucero each scored their own hat tricks.

The Panthers went up 6-0 by the midway point of the first half and never allowed Whittier closer than four for the rest of the match. The Poets went on a 3-1 scoring spurt to close the game to 7-3 but junior Danielle Zahn put away a free position shot and was followed by goals from sophomore Alexandra Callaway and Lucero to push their lead back to seven.

Whittier was able to cut it down to five goals as Neely O'Grady just beat the horn with a goal at the end of the half. Chapman responded with the first five goals of the second half and went on to outscore the Poets 10-2 in the final half hour to cruise to the win.

The Panther defense limited Whittier to just 12 shots in the match, including only three in the second half as the offense continued to light up the scoreboard. Whittier committed 30 turnovers with the Panthers racking up 17 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls to limit the Poets opportunities. Whittier was also just 8-of-23 on clearing opportunities while Chapman was 10-of-14.

The Panthers homestand continues next week when they host Redlands on Mar. 31 at 7 p.m.
