Women's lacrosse falls in SCIAC semifinals

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team fell 17-6 to No. 22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the semifinal of the SCIAC Tournament on Saturday. The Panthers have made the SCIAC semifinals in each year of program history.

Sophomore Leah Donnelly scored three goals to lead the Chapman attack while freshman Taylor Hextrum made 14 saves in goal.

The Athenas scored the first five goals of the match before Donnelly scored the first goal for the Panthers. Donnelly scored two of the next three goals of the match to cut it to 6-2 but CMS continued to add to its lead in route to a 12-3 lead at halftime.

Donnelly had her hat trick before halftime, scoring all of the Panthers' goals. Sophomore Allie Qualman and junior Lucy Schwartz each added goals in the second half. Senior Stacey Zuppa, the Panthers' all-time points leader, also converted a free-position shot and dished out an assist to cap her record-shattering career.

Corie Hack and Evan Murphy each scored four goals to lead CMS into the SCIAC Tournament championship match.

The Panthers season comes to a close with the loss but the Panthers will be back in 2019 with an expanded SCIAC schedule. With the addition of a Cal Lutheran program, the SCIAC will expand to seven teams and have an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championship.
