Women’s lacrosse completes eight-goal comeback to defeat Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Danielle Zahn tied the school record and scored seven goals as the Chapman University women's lacrosse team came back from down eight goals to beat the visiting Redlands Bulldogs 22-17 earlier this afternoon. The captain also tallied an assist in the winning effort to lead Chapman to a crucial victory.

With seven goals this afternoon, Zahn tied Kelsey Mackin for the most goals scored in a single game. She also tallied eight points with her assist, tying the single-game record for most points in a game. After her stellar performance today, the midfielder now ranks fifth all-time at Chapman with 101 goals and 123 total points.

Junior Leah Donnelly was the first to strike, giving Chapman the lead after just over three minutes of play. The Bulldogs answered with a couple of quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. Zahn scored her first two goals of the match in response to re-take the lead for the Panthers. Each team got in a couple more goals before Redlands went on a 7-0 run to end the half up 11-5.

The Bulldogs scored the first two goals of the second half to extend their lead to eight goals. Freshman Vanessa Topete responded with her second goal of the match, but Redlands put another one away less than a minute later to keep a 14-6 lead.

Cue a massive Chapman run. The Panthers spent the next 17 minutes and 30 seconds going on a 14-1 run fueled by 12 draw controls. In that period of time, the Panthers only lost two draw controls while giving up just one goal.

Redlands found the back of the net a couple more times, but junior Alexandra Callaway and Zahn added two more goals in the final minutes of play to seal the thrilling comeback victory.

Topete, Callaway and junior Lucy Schwartz each tallied three goals in the high-scoring game. Schwartz also tallied an assist and four draw controls in the effort while Topete picked up five ground balls.

Freshman Meg Hanson continues to be a big name for the Panthers as she put four goals away and dished out one assist. She also picked up two ground balls and caused a turnover in the victory. Zahn won nine draw controls and picked up six ground balls to go along with her record-setting day.

Sophomore Preetha Raj was solid in goal, tallying 11 saves and seven ground balls.

The Panthers return to Wilson Field on Tuesday, March 26 to host Kalamazoo College of Michigan at 4 p.m.
