Zahn ties school record for second game in a row

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Danielle Zahn tied the school record for goals scored in a single game – for the second game in a row. Just Saturday afternoon Zahn tied the record, scoring seven goals and leading a comeback effort against Redlands. This time, the captain scored seven as the Panthers rolled past Kalamazoo College 15-8.

After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play, the Hornets scored two in a row to jump to a 2-0 lead. Zahn responded with her first goal of the game just over one minute later. Kalamazoo found the back of the net again less than a minute later. The Panthers finished the half with four consecutive goals, three of them coming from Zahn, to take a 5-3 lead at the half.

Chapman won the draw control to start the second half and Zahn scored her fifth goal of the game on the same possession after picking up her own rebound.

Kalamazoo responded with a couple of goals within a minute and a half of each other to cut the deficit to just one goal, but the Panthers caught fire and went on a 9-1 run in which eight different Panthers found the back of the net. The Hornets added two more goals in the final two minutes, but the Panthers walked away with their second consecutive victory.

A few newcomers found the back of the net, including freshmen Vanessa Topete, Summer Khatib, Meg Hanson and Danni Malinski. Junior Leah Donnelly added a couple of goals while fellow junior Lucy Schwartz scored her 19th goal of the season.

The Panthers tallied 52 total ground balls, compared to Kalamazoo's 31. Freshman Allison Smith and junior Alexandra Callaway led the way as they as they tallied five ground balls apiece. Senior Shelby Thompson picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers in the defensive effort.

The Panthers return to Wilson Field on Wednesday, April 10 as they take on Whittier at 7 p.m.
