Women's lacrosse leaps into win column over Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season with a 16-9 win over Redlands on Saturday. Freshman Corinn Valeri and sophomore Danni Malinski led the Panthers with three goals apiece.

The Panthers held the Bulldogs to just 19 shots in the contest while taking 36 shots on the other end. They also won 17 of the 27 draw controls, led by four from senior Michaela Lopez.

The Panthers struck with the first goal of the game but found themselves down 2-1 just seven minutes in. While playing down a player serving a yellow card, sophomore Riley Murphy earned a free position shot on converted to tie up the match at 2-2. The match-tying goal sparked a 5-0 run that saw Chapman build a 6-2 lead with 6:29 left in the first half.

Redlands scored the final two goals of the half to make it a much closer 6-4 at halftime and quickly pulled within one to start the second half. With the score 7-6 and still over 23 minutes remaining, senior Alexandra Callaway and senior Leah Donnelly scored back-to-back goals to push the lead back to three. Malinski followed with her second goal of the contest to make it 10-6.

The Panthers had an answer every time Redlands scored a goal and went on another later 4-0 run to put the match out of reach.

Sophomroe Jaime Wendt earned her first win in goal with a pair of saves. Junior Taylor Hextrum saw her first action of the season when she replaced Wendt in the second half and made one save. Donnelly had two goals and two assists to go along with five ground balls, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

The Panthers are back home for a Friday matinee on Mar. 6. Chapman hosts Kenyon at 2 p.m. in its first non-conference match of the season.
