Quick goal helps Chapman get back in the win column

ORANGE, Calif. - Perhaps still feeling the sting from a tough loss to La Verne two days earlier, it didn't take long for the Chapman University women's soccer team to get off the mat. Senior F Claire Callister scored a goal just 34 seconds into the contest and the Panthers never looked back, defeating visiting La Sierra University 3-0 at Wilson Field on Friday afternoon.

Callister poked a shot past La Sierra GK Jocelyn Bennet off a pass from freshman D Tess Amato after Amato had centered a free kick following an early foul call. The goal was Callister's team-best fourth game-winner of the year.

Chapman (12-4) then ended the half the same way it started. Senior F Corey Meyerson scored her first goal of the season in the 41st minute to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

For good measure, the Panthers' leading scorer, senior F Stephanie Lambrakis, got into the act with her eighth goal of the season. Lambrakis' goal was unassisted and scored midway through the second half in the 64th minute of play.

The game figured to be high-scoring for Chapman as head coach Courtney Calderon inserted four forwards into her starting lineup. Two of the four scored goals and Meyerson added hers from off the bench. The Panthers out-shot La Sierra 31-4 in the game - the second time this season the Panthers have taken more than 30 shots.

Sophomore GK Chloe Canta made two saves and earned her seventh shutout of the season. It was the Panthers' eighth shutout and they lowered their team goals-against average to 0.87 for the season.
