Oxy's late second half goal drops Chapman in home opener

ORANGE, Calif. – For 85 minutes, the Chapman University women's soccer team never trailed against visiting Occidental College. But in the 86th minute, junior D Liz Martin scored off a rebound on her own corner kick to give Occidental a 2-1 win on Wednesday night at Wilson Field in Chapman's home-opener.

With four seconds remaining in the game, sophomore F Aimee Evans nearly tied the score on a last-second shot only to see Occidental (2-1) senior GK Robin Feldman make a diving stop to preserve the win. Feldman had eight saves for the Tigers.

Martin crossed the ball in on the corner kick only to have it bounce back out to her on the right wing. She then booted a high-arcing shot just out of the reach of Chapman junior GK Chloe Canta into the left corner of the net for the game-winning goal. Canta had four saves in net for Chapman with three coming in the second half.

Chapman (3-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 first-half lead when freshman F Camy Jun scored off an assist by senior M Bridget Thomson in the third minute. For the first several minutes of the half Chapman controlled the ball, but in the 17th minute Occidental tied the game 1-1 when freshman Elissa Minamishin connected with freshman Alex Nicholson for the goal. Despite outshooting Occidental 13-8 in the first half, the score remained 1-1 at halftime. The teams each attempted 16 shots for the game.
