ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team won its sixth consecutive home game, defeating visiting Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) 2-1 at Wilson Field on Thursday evening. The Panthers' streak dates back to last September while the win staked this year's squad to an early 2-0 record.
Junior F Val Sobol scored the game-winner in the 59th minute, heading the ball past Pioneers' GK Geena Fong off a perfectly-placed cross pass from freshman D Ashley Sweeting on the right wing. The goal was Sobol's first of the year and completed Chapman's comeback after falling behind 1-0 midway through the first half.
The Pioneers – playing in their season opener – got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Anna Thorndike in the 23rd minute as Lewis & Clark took advantage of an out-numbered attack in the keeper box.
Chapman tied it 10 minutes later as sophomore F Rebeccah Bortz came off the bench to score her second goal of the season on an assist from senior M Karina Cisneros. That knotted the score at one heading into halftime.
Sophomore GK Marissa Fehrman made a pair of saves to improve to 2-0 as Chapman's starting keeper.
The Panthers will hit the road for five of their next six matches including a trip to Santa Cruz this weekend to face UC Santa Cruz and Buffalo State (N.Y.)
