Women's soccer stays perfect at home with 2-1 win over Oxy

ORANGE, Calif. – Following a tough week that featured three straight road games, the Chapman University women's soccer team returned to the friendly confines of Wilson Field on Wednesday, defeating the Occidental Tigers, 2-1. The win improved the Panthers' conference record to 3-2 while they remain undefeated in three home matches.

Chapman held possession for the majority of the match, outshooting the Tigers by a tally of 26-7. Junior F Rebeccah Bortz kicked off the scoring for the Panthers, sinking her second goal on the season (first since Aug. 31) off a deflection in the 26th minute.

Chapman did not have the lead for long as Oxy freshman F Julie Khil broke away from the defense to net the equalizing goal, taking advantage of Panthers GK Marissa Fehrman in a one-on-one opportunity. The goal marked the first allowed by the Panthers at home this season and the only ball to get past Fehrman in the match as she finished with four saves.

Not comfortable entering halftime without a lead, the Panthers added another goal in the 39th minute when freshman M Katie Bell scored what would prove to be the game-winner off an assist from freshman F Rosie Kerstetter.

The Panthers matched the 13 shots they took in the first half with another 13 in the second half, but came up empty despite several close calls. Their offensive attack proved to be a prudent defensive game plan as they limited the Tigers to just two second half shots as they held on for the victory. The win over Oxy was the third straight for the Panthers, who have outscored the Tigers 9-1 over the three-game span.

The Panthers will be back on the pitch this Saturday for a Homecoming match against Cal Lutheran at 11 a.m.
