Panthers suffer first home loss at the hands of Cal Lu

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team lost a tough battle on Saturday, falling 1-0 after competing against both the Cal Lutheran Regals and the elements. Strong gusts of wind affected the entire match and played a role in the contest's only goal, snapping the Panthers' home winning streak at eight games (dating back to last season).

The Panthers defense withstood the Regals' attack for the first 54 minutes, but a well-placed free kick by Cal Lu's Elena Rust caught a gust of wind and overshot its intended target, bouncing past Chapman GK Marissa Fehrman for the game-winner.

With gusts of wind upwards of 20 mph, both teams had trouble mustering up any offense in the first half. The Regals dominated the game on the ground however, maintaining possession for the majority of the first 45 minutes and outshooting the Panthers 8-6. Chapman had its turn with the wind at its back in the second half and outshot the Regals 8-6, but came up empty as Cal Lu GK Kristin Bailey made six saves to complete her shutout of the Panthers.

The Homecoming day defeat marks the third time the Panthers have been shutout in 2013 and the first time since Sept. 21 at Redlands. The Panthers have alternated wins and losses in their last six contests and they will look to continue that trend for one more match with a win over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs on Monday at 4 p.m.
