Redlands catches a break in 2-1 win over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – For the second time this season, the Chapman University women's soccer team suffered a tough loss at the hands of the Redlands Bulldogs, falling 2-1 at Wilson Field on Wednesday. The loss, which came less than one month after Redlands earned a 1-0 overtime victory, marked the Panthers' sixth straight loss to the Bulldogs.

Redlands got on the board early, scoring in the fifth minute when F Nicole Fox had her shot deflected by a Chapman defender, sending it past GK Marissa Fehrman to give Redlands a 1-0 advantage.

Chapman responded with a formidable offensive attack, outshooting the Bulldogs by a 9-6 margin overall in the half. The Panthers' efforts came up empty in the first 45 minutes, while Redlands was able to extend its lead when M Savannah Laursen netted the Bulldogs' second goal with just 35 seconds remaining.

Chapman came out firing in the second half, needing only two shots to net their first and only goal. Senior F Val Sobol placed her shot perfectly in the top corner of the net, scoring her fifth goal on the season off an assist from junior M Emma Castleton.

The Panthers outshot the Bulldogs 5-3 in the second half, but failed to muster another goal as they saw their brief two-game win streak come to an end. The loss also marks the first time in six games that Chapman has allowed more than one goal.

The Panthers have five matches remaining on their schedule, with the next two being played at home. The Whittier Poets will visit Wilson Field to take on the Panthers on Saturday at 7 p.m., followed by the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
