Panthers fall to first-place La Verne 2-0 at home

ORANGE, Calif. –The Chapman University women's soccer team battled with the heat and Leopards for 90 minutes on Saturday morning at Wilson Field, falling 2-0 to University of La Verne in the contest at home. The Panthers move to 4-4 overall and 1-3 SCIAC while La Verne moves to a 5-2-1 record overall and 3-1 in SCIAC for first-place seeding in conference.

With 15 minutes left in the first half, La Verne's senior M Cassidy Schweiger booted a corner from the right-side crossing to sophomore F Jessica Hernandez who found the back of the net to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes into the second half Hernandez struck net again off a cross from senior M Kelsea Varner to give the Leopards the 2-0 victory. La Verne freshman GK Jasmine Valdez moved to 3-1 on the season with a strong defensive outing not allowing a single shot on goal.

The Panthers managed four shots on offense including a break away shot in the second half by junior M Julia Diaz. Chapman junior GK Kristin Kleinow had three diving saves in the match while allowing just two goals.  

The Panthers will return to Wilson Field to host Redlands on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. Chapman will then travel to Claremont for a match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
