Kingsmore's Early Goal Doesn't Hold In Loss To Occidental

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team went up early but suffered a 4-1 loss to visiting Occidental on Wednesday. Junior Kortney Kingsmore scored her fifth goal of the season – tied for the team lead.

Kingsmore's goal opened the scoring and was the only goal of the first half. Jessica Loya lobbed a pass toward the top of the 18-yard box in the 24th minute and Celina Solomon headed it forward. Kingsmore raced her defender and the keeper to the ball, getting there just in time to flick it over the diving keeper and into the net.

With Kingsmore's early goal, Chapman (5-9, 1-8 SCIAC) went ahead for the third time in the last four matches. However, Occidental (5-6-1, 4-4-1 SCIAC) roared back in the second half with four goals despite Chapman outshooting the Tigers. The Panthers fired 15 shots and put eight on goal while the Tigers shot just 10 times, putting 7 on goal.

Junior Kristin Kleinow came away with three saves in the contest. Michaela Tsuha put Oxy on the board when she put in her own rebound in the 52nd minute. Her initial shot hit the post but bounced perfectly into a wide open space in front of the net. She was able to run on and tap in the equalizer. Oxy scored again just under two minutes later when Camille Shrager found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead.

Chapman appeared to draw even with the Tigers in the 69th minute as senior Solomon's shot from distance headed toward the top left corner. However, the ball was ruled to have hit the post and crossbar before bouncing out.

With the Panthers continuing to push forward, Occidental was able to play the ball over the top for a pair of one-on-one chances, which were buried to pad the lead.

Chapman is on the road this Saturday to face Whittier.
