Lustig nets pair, Panthers fall to CMS

ORANGE, Calif. –Freshman Rachel Lustig scored a pair of goals for the Panthers but the Chapman University women's soccer team fell 4-3 to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at Wilson Field. Seniors Kourtney Kingsmore and Julia Diaz each earned an assist in the Panthers senior match.

Claremont (14-5-1 overall, 11-2-1 SCIAC) took the early lead over Chapman 3-0 in the first 25 minutes of play. Freshman Rhiann Holman scored the Athenas first goal on a rebound shot blocked by the hands of senior Kristin Kleinow to help Claremont to the early 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later Remi Edwards lifted the Athenas to 2-0 by knocking in the goal on a high kick. The Athena's third goal came from Katelyn Faust whose took a shot from right of the box and scored on a ball that narrowly passed by Kleinow.

Junior Wren Osler added an insurance goal for the Athenas at the 84th minute on a free kick from over 35 yards out that floated just over the Chapman goalie to move Claremont to a 4-2 lead.

Lustig was first to put the Panthers on the board in the match. With less than a minute left in the first half, Kingsmore crossed left to Lustig who tapped the ball in to the corner of the net to help Chapman to a 3-1 score. At the 79th minute freshman Taryn Silverglate scored on centered pass by Diaz to help the Panther to 3-2.

With just five minutes left in the match Lustig found the net again. The freshman followed up on her own shot to score on a rebound and help the Panthers to 4-3. After scoring a brace in today's match, Lustig now leads the Panthers with four goals this season.

The No. 4 Panthers (9-8-1 overall, 6-7-1 SCIAC) will travel to No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer for the SCIAC Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
