Women's soccer handed first loss of the season

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team lost their first game of the season 3-1 to Cal Lutheran on Saturday night. The Panthers' only goal of the night was scored by freshman Morgan Lynch.

The Regals got four shots off before they were able to put one in the back of the net in the 26th minute. Just three minutes later, Cal Lutheran capitalized again, this time on a shot from senior Kali Youngahl. Chapman goalkeeper, junior Maeve O'Connor, could not seem to handle the blast and the Regals went up 2-0.

The Panthers struck in the 42nd minute as Lynch fought through a pair of defenders and ripped a shot into the left side netting, giving Chapman momentum going into the second half.

Cal Lutheran was awarded a penalty kick in the 60th minute, which sophomore Zandra Stewart was able to capitalize on, giving the Regals a 3-1 lead.

Chapman and Cal Lutheran exchanged fouls the rest of the game, with the Panthers tallying 15 total fouls and four yellow cards and the Regals committing 13 fouls and receiving two yellows.

Cal Lutheran held their lead until the final whistle, handing Chapman their first loss of the season and improving to 2-0 in SCIAC play.

The Panthers head to Whittier and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for their next two games, but return to Wilson Field on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. to take on the University of Redlands.
