Early goal not enough in 2-1 loss to Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Shelby Brown scored her third goal of the season but the Chapman University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to visiting Whittier on Saturday.

Brown scored the first goal of the match as the Panthers (6-8, 2-8 SCIAC) took a brief lead. A cross in was punched away but right to the waiting feet of Brown, who took a couple of touches into the box and buried a shot to the lower left for the 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

Whittier (8-6, 4-6 SCIAC) didn't take long to retaliate. Clarissa Field's free kick from the side of the 18-yard box went directly to Miranda Yzabal's feet for a one-timer into the net less than a minute after Brown's goal. The teams went into halftime tied 1-1 but the Panthers held a 9-4 shot advantage.

Whittier reversed the shot advantage in the second half and fired off nine shots to Chapman's four. Junior Maeve O'Connor made a pair of saves but Whittier scored the game-winner in the 60th minute. Leah Kolek floated a shot from 45 yards just underneath the crossbar to put the Poets in front.

Chapman nearly knotted the match back up in the 70th minute but freshman Riley Pidgeon's shot bounced off the post to preserve Whittier's lead.

The Panthers are back on Wilson Field on Wednesday to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 4 p.m.
