Brown nets overtime goal for 1-0 victory

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman women's soccer team defeated the visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1-0 in overtime this afternoon at Wilson Field. Junior Shelby Brown netted the game-winning goal in the first overtime to lift the Panthers over the Athenas.

The first half of play saw back-and-forth action as both the Panthers and CMS had chances on goal. Chapman peppered freshman goalkeeper Claire Hamson with six shots in the first 45 minutes of play, putting five of those on frame. The Athenas kept junior goalkeeper Maeve O'Connor on her toes, taking three shots in the first half, all of which O'Connor was forced to save.

The Panthers had the bulk of the chances in the second half with seven shots, but were unable to convert in the second 45 minutes of play. Chapman's defense only allowed three shots for CMS in the second half, forcing the first overtime period.

O'Connor came up clutch in the first three minutes of overtime, stretching out to make a diving save on a fast-paced shot headed into the far corner of the goal by sophomore Rhiann Holman. After two failed corner kicks by the Athenas, Chapman struck.

With less than five minutes left on the clock, freshman Elle Uyeda found Brown at the corner of the 18-yard box, who lofted the ball to the far left post. Hamson tried to punch the ball over the goal, but could not quite get a handle on the perfectly placed ball and punched it into the back of the net. The golden goal ended the match and sent the Panther squad streaking onto the field.

Chapman travels to Redlands and Occidental for its next two matches but heads home on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. to take on La Verne for its final game of the 2017 season.
