Women’s soccer rolls past Caltech 5-0

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team rolled past the visiting Caltech Beavers 5-0 earlier this afternoon to notch its first SCIAC victory. Sophomore Emmie Farber led the Panthers (4-5, 1-3 SCIAC) with two goals.

The Beavers (1-5, 0-5 SCIAC) held Chapman off in the first half, only allowing one goal off a set play. Farber found the back of the net in the 16th minute when she sent a corner kick from the left side straight into the right side netting.

The Panthers kicked it into high gear coming out of the half time talk and the flood gates opened. Sophomore Elle Uyeda kicked off the second half scoring less than four minutes in, hitting a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that sailed over Beavers sophomore goalkeeper Kali Drango's outstretched arms. Freshman Rory Biles set Uyeda up, tallying her second assist on the season.

Farber found the back of the net for the second time just four minutes later after beating her defender one-on-one and slotting the ball past Drango.

The Panthers continued to dominate the second half, controlling possession and testing Drango with outside shots. With just four minutes left to play, sophomore Riley Pidgeon blasted a shot from just outside the corner of the 18-yard box, forcing Drango to make a diving save. Sophomore Allison Merrill found the ball at her feet off the rebound and one-time volleyed it into the back of the net to up the score to 4-0.

Junior Bailee Cochran sealed the deal for Chapman just over two minutes later when she stripped a defender of the ball to find herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The forward set the ball up to her left foot, slotting the ball in the right side netting to make the final score 5-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Bland recorded two saves and tallied her fourth win and fourth shutout of the season, ranking first in the conference. Chapman's defense also held strong, only allowing four shots and giving up no corner kicks. Junior Faith Holloway, freshman Cate Combi and Uyeda each played a full 90 minutes on the back line for the Panthers.

The Panthers absolutely bombarded Drango with 28 shots, 14 of which were on target. The goalkeeper was forced to make nine saves in her 90 minutes of play.

Chapman returns to Wilson Field this Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. to round out their three-match home stand as they take on the University of La Verne.
