Women's soccer come up short in second half flurry

ORANGE, Calif. – The second half featured six goals but the Chapman University women's soccer team came up short in a 4-2 loss to visiting Cal Lutheran. A pair of Panthers scored their first career goals in the loss.

After a scoreless first half, both sides came out hunting for a goal. The Regals struck first when Danielle Vis headed in a goal in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Taylor Scranton answered for the Panthers six and a half minutes later with a long, arcing shot from 35 yards out. The ball floated over the keepers head and banked off the far post into the net.

The Regals headed in another goal in the 61st minute off a free kick to quickly reclaim the lead. In the 74th minute, a Panthers' shot was mishandled by the keeper. A scrum in front of the net resulted in the ball bouncing to freshman Daniela Bergerson, who swept it into the goal for another equalizer.

Cal Lutheran's Sonia Chan scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute when she ran on to a high pass over the back line and volleyed it over the keeper for a 3-2 lead. The Regals scored again as time expired.

After combining for nine shots in the first half, Chapman took eight shots in the second and Cal Lutheran fired off seven. Sophomore Courtney Ahdoot made four saves in her first start in goal for the Panthers.

Chapman is back on Wilson Field on Saturday at 7 p.m. to take on Whittier College.
