ORANGE, Calif. – Lightning struck for the Chapman University women's soccer team in a 5-1 win over visiting UC Santa Cruz. Sophomore Emmie Farber and junior Bailee Cochran each scored twice in the rout.
The Panthers' attack struck early and often for a 3-0 halftime lead. Farber opened the scoring just eight minutes into the match. After taking possession of the ball near midfield, she beat two defenders and swung a well-struck shot inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.
Cochran tapped in a free kick for her first goal and sophomore Riley Pidgeon scored in the 44th minute when Cochran played it back to her for long shot inside the far post.
Actual lightning struck in the second half, forcing a long delay in the match. Farber scored before the delay but UCSC came out strong when play resumed. The Slugs' Cayce Shaw put UCSC on the board to make it 4-1. However, the Panthers withstood their furious attempt at a comeback and put the fifth goal on the board.
Pidgeon put a bouncing free kick in the box and Coachran was able to just touch it past the keeper to complete her five-point match.
The Panthers outshot the Slugs 18-6 in the match and limited UCSC to just one shot in the first half.
Chapman gets back into SCIAC play on Wednesday when it hosts Occidental at 4 p.m.
