Brown nets game-winner in women’s soccer victory

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team handed the visiting Occidental Tigers (7-2-4, 6-2-4 SCIAC) just their second loss of the season in a 1-0 victory earlier this evening. Senior Shelby Brown led the Panthers (8-9, 4-7 SCIAC) with the game-winner in the second half.

The two sides fought back-and-forth in a scoreless first half, with Occidental taking six shots and Chapman firing off five. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Bland was forced to make four saves to keep her team in the match, while Tigers senior goalkeeper Sydney Tomlinson blocked two.

The Panthers earned a corner kick just five minutes into the second half. Brown struck the ball, curling it into the goalkeeper's path. Freshman Daniela Bergerson was able to distract Tomlinson enough so that she batted the ball into the back of her own net, giving Chapman a 1-0 lead.

From then on, it was all defense. Junior Faith Holloway and sophomore Elle Uyeda anchored the back line as they kept Occidental away from goal. The Tigers rattled off six shots, but Bland was able to snag four saves and keep the ball out of the back of the net to secure the victory.

Bland earned her fourth shutout of the season while also tying a career-high eight saves in the match.

The Panthers head on the road for their next two matched but return to Wilson Field for their final home match on Saturday, Oct. 27 as they host Pomona-Pitzer in their senior game.
