Coyle's early goal stands up in 1-0 win over No. 20 MIT

ORANGE, Calif. – An early goal stood up for the Chapman University women's soccer team in a 1-0 victory over No. 20 MIT on Tuesday. The Panthers remained undefeated in the young season as they ran their record to 3-0.

Freshman Shannon Coyle scored her first career goal just 5:35 into the match in what proved to be the difference. The Panthers countered down the right sideline and sophomore Cate Combi sent a cross all the way across the box. It cleared an outstretched arm of MIT's goalie and bounced to a sprinting Coyle on the back post.

Coyle's goal was the first and only shot of the first 45 minutes for the Panthers, who withstood a furious MIT attack. The Engineers (1-1-1) took 10 shots in the first half and 19 shots in the match while holding the Panthers to just three shots in the match.

Sophomore Kelsey Bland made six saves for the Panthers in goal before exiting with an injury. Freshman Erin Kelly made her Panther debut and held her own in goal while MIT ramped up the attack in the waning moments.

Chapman won its first two matches in Oregon last weekend with a pair of goals in each match. The shutout victory is the second consecutive shutout for Bland and the Panthers.

The non-conference segment of the season continues on Sunday when Chapman welcomes another Northwest Conference foe – Willamette – to Wilson Field.
