Panthers sweep Cal Lu in home opener
ORANGE, Calif. - In its home opener, the No. 23-ranked Chapman University women's tennis team swept through its singles and doubles matches in a 9-0 shutout of Cal Lutheran University on Thursday afternoon at the Chapman Tennis Courts to earn its first team victory this season.
Doubles partners and 2009 All-American juniors Liz Lewis and Kelley Fox led the Panthers with a 8-0 victory from the No. 1 position followed by individual wins in singles play. The pair is ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division III in the ITA preseason polls.
At the No. 2 doubles position, sophomore Cassady Sirois and freshman Amy Logan had a decisive 8-1 win, as did freshman Candace Scholler and junior Sheehan Trippel at the No. 3 spot.
Top-seeded Lewis, ranked No. 10 in the nation in singles, defeated Cal Lutheran's Jordan Leckness 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 2-0 this spring and 11-0 overall. Fox and the other four Panthers earned their first singles wins of the young season - all in straight sets.
The Panthers next match will be held at Occidental College on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
