Upset-minded Chapman takes down No. 11 Carnegie Mellon

ORANGE, Calif. -  The Chapman University women's tennis team had upset on its mind when it returned to the court on Monday to finish its match against No. 11-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. And the Panthers did just that, beating the visiting Tartans 5-4 at the Chapman Tennis Courts in a rain-suspended match that began on Saturday.

In the No. 6-seeded singles match, freshman Genna Ford won the clincher in three sets, defeating Alisa Liebowitz 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to give No. 23-ranked Chapman the deciding point - one that will almost certainly move the Panthers up in the national polls. Another three-set thriller was won by Chapman sophomore Cassady Sirois from the No. 4 singles position, beating CMU's Jennifer Chui 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 to keep the Panthers alive.

Another minor upset took place in the No. 1 singles match as Chapman's No. 10-ranked Liz Lewis defeated No. 6 Laura Chen in straight sets 7-5, 7-6. The junior improved to 3-0 this spring and 12-0 overall.

Chapman (3-1) had fallen behind after losing two of three in doubles play. The Panthers' only doubles victory came from Lewis and junior Kelley Fox with an 8-2 win. The duo, ranked No. 15 in Division III, won for the third straight match and is 3-1 overall.
