Brandeis hands Chapman a loss in home opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team dropped its home opener to Brandeis University, 7-2 at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Wednesday. The Panthers secured just one match each in singles and doubles play.

Chapman junior Kelley Klebenow held on in a tight match to record the team's only singles victory on the day, defeating Brandeis' Alexa Katz, 6-4 and 7-6 from the No. 7 position. Freshman Andrea Hammer held the No. 1 position on Wednesday, but fell to the Judges' Carley Cooke, 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Sophia Duong, who played the majority of her matches in the No. 1 position as a freshman last year, faced Faith Broderick in the No. 2 position and lost, 6-2, 6-4.

The Panthers held their own in doubles play, but came away with just one victory. Hammer and Duong were featured in the No. 1 position, but lost to Cooke and Broderick, 8-3. Klebenow and senior Arielle Kubetschek salvaged a doubles victory from the No. 3 position, winning 8-4.

Chapman will look to win its first match of the season on Saturday at 10 a.m. when it opens up SCIAC play versus Cal Lutheran at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
