No. 23-ranked Panthers defeat Salisbury, UT-Tyler

ORANGE, Calif. – Recently cracking the top-30 of the Division III rankings, the Chapman University women's tennis team won again on Monday, celebrating St. Patrick's Day with an 8-1 victory over visiting Salisbury University (Md.) at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The win came two days after a 6-3 loss to another top-30 team Vassar College (N.Y.) on Saturday at home and capped a busy weekend that included a 7-2 win over Texas-Tyler.

Chapman 7, Texas-Tyler 2

The Panthers took five of the six singles matches to cruise to a 7-2 win over West Region-rival Texas-Tyler. No. 1 singles player, sophomore Andrea Hammer led the way for Chapman with a straight sets win over the Patriots' regionally-ranked Jessica Blundell 7-5, 6-4. The win improved Hammer's dual match record this spring to 4-4 – all on the No. 1 court.

Vassar 6, Chapman 3

In a battle of top-30 teams, No. 27-ranked Vassar knocked off the newly-ranked No. 23 Panthers after taking two of three in doubles play and then four of the six singles matches. Chapman's top doubles team Hammer and freshman Rachel Fox continued to roll this season with their fourth straight win to improve to 10-2 overall and 8-1 in dual matches. They handed Vassar's Samantha Schapiro and Shayna Becker an 8-2 loss on the No. 1 court.

In singles play, it was Chapman junior Sophia Duong who earned one of the Panthers' two wins from the No. 3 court, improving to 7-1 this spring.

Chapman 8, Salisbury 1

Chapman (6-4) won for the third time in four matches with a convincing win over Salisbury on Monday, that included a doubles sweep on all three courts. Hammer and Fox defeated the Seagulls' Natalie Savage and Roxanne Alban 8-3 to run their winning streak to five matches. Duong and junior Kelley Klebenow improved to 3-0 this season from the No. 3 position with an 8-1 win and are 7-1 overall as a pair.

Duong, playing on the No. 2 court for the first time this year, improved to 11-2 overall and 8-1 this spring with a straight sets win over Alban to lead Chapman as one of five wins in singles play. It was Duong's fourth straight win.
