Tennis teams sweep Rochester

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's tennis teams swept a rare home doubleheader with the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Tuesday. The men opened with a mini upset over the No. 40 nationally-ranked Yellowjackets 5-4 and the Panthers' No. 31-ranked women earned their first win of the year 6-3.

Men: Chapman 5, Rochester 4

After the Panthers rallied from a 2-1 deficit following doubles, it came down to court six in singles play where sophomore Sam Mitteldorf won in straight sets over Aaron Mevorach 6-4, 6-4. The win helped Chapman take four of the six singles matches and clinch the team's third win in their past four matches.

Also winners for Chapman, freshman Justin P. Thompson won his fourth consecutive singles match on court two, 6-3, 7-5 to improve to 6-3 overall this season (5-1 in dual matches). Junior Brett Buford and sophomore Charlie Werman were also winners in straight sets, after teaming up for the Panthers' lone doubles win, 8-6 on court two. The duo has now won four of their past six matches.

Women: Chapman 6, Rochester 3

The Panthers got their first team win of the season thanks to a sweep of doubles and wins on each of the first three courts in singles play. Junior Andrea Hammer and senior Rachel Fox also earned their first doubles win of the year, taking down the Yellowjackets' top seed 8-2. Fox was a late scratch from singles play which forced senior Sophia Duong to move up a spot, which was no problem. Playing on the second court for the first time this year, Duong won her third match in a row and improved to 5-1 this season with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win over Dorothy Tai.

Hammer (court one) and sophomore Madeline Saunders (court three) also earned wins in straight sets to help the Panthers to the victory.

The women return to action on Wednesday, hosting No. 40-ranked Trinity University (Texas) at 1 p.m., while the men will be home against Trinity College (Conn.) on Saturday at 2 p.m. All action will take place at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
