Duong and Saunders stay hot, but Panthers fall to Amherst

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University women's tennis duo of senior Sophia Duong and sophomore Madeline Saunders remained hot, giving the Panthers their only point in an 8-1 loss to No. 4-ranked Amherst College at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon.

Duong and Saunders improved to 6-2 as a pair this season, defeating Amherst's Simone Aisiks and Megan Adamo 8-4 on court two. It was their second straight win and third in their past four matches.

Chapman (3-5), ranked No. 32 in Division III, was swept in singles play, including Saunders who had her three-match winning streak snapped with a straight sets loss to Sarah Monteagudo, ranked No. 23 in the Northeast Region. In fact each of Amherst's top four singles players were all ranked among the Northeast Region's top-25. Only Chapman senior Rachel Fox forced a tiebreak set, losing 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 to No. 6 regionally-ranked Sue Ghosh.

Duong, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, fell to Vickie Ip, 6-3, 6-0 and dropped to 7-4 this season. It was only Duong's third loss in dual match play this spring.

The Panthers return to SCIAC play on Friday as they host Cal Lutheran University at 2 p.m. at Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.
