Panthers finish on high note in SCIAC Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team defeated Occidental College 7-2 to capture seventh place at the SCIAC Tournament hosted by Pomona-Pitzer College on Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers opened up the match strong with an 8-4 doubles win by senior Andrea Hammer and junior Madeline Saunders. Nicole Fouts and Thimanthi Withana then went on to blank their first opponents of the year 8-0 to help the Panthers to a 2-0 lead.

However, Danielle Simmons and Thea Knobel fell 8-0 to Oxy pair Andrea Clawson and Isabella Korfmann to give the Beavers their first win of the day.

In singles play, Hammer continued to dominate in the No. 1 slot, improving to 2-0 on the weekend. Hammer defeated Samantha Farrell 6-1, 6-4 in the opening singles match to help the Panthers edge the Beavers 3-1.

In the No. 2 spot, Saunders cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 defeat over Oxy's Lucy Malloch to help Chapman to 4-1. Saunders finished the season 7-8 from the No. 2 spot

The Panthers then went on to secure the win when Whithana defeated Korfman 6-5, 7-5 from the No. 3 spot and Simmons blanked Natalie De Benedetti 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot.

The Panthers finished the season on a high note with Hammer and Saunders leading the team with eight doubles wins.
