Women's tennis captures win in season finale

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team ended its season on a high note, defeating Whittier 4-3 in the seventh place match at the SCIAC Tournament. The Panthers previously fell to Cal Lutheran earlier in the day.

After falling 5-0 to Cal Lutheran in the morning match, the short-handed Panthers were matched up with a short-handed Whittier squad in the seventh place match. Neither the No. 3 doubles match nor No. 6 singles match were played.

The two teams split the doubles matches with sophomore Nicole Fouts and freshman Raven Hampton pulling out the 8-5 win in the No. 2 match. The teams headed into the five singles matches tied 1-1. Senior Madeline Saunders swept the final match of her career with a 7-5, 6-0 win in the No. 1 match. Sophomore Jaye Orikasa quickly won 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 match. Hampton pulled out the 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 to give the Panthers the 4-3 edge.

Both the Nos. 2 and 5 matches went into a third set with Whittier claiming both matches.

The young Panthers squad ended its season with its first SCIAC win of the year.
