Women’s tennis wins season opener with come-from-behind third-set victory

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team won its 2018 season opener 5-4 against Biola earlier today. Freshman Madison Ross defeated Eagle freshman Madison Swaney in a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) victory in the No. 2 match.

After splitting the first two sets, the pair headed into a third set where Ross defeated Swaney in a seven-point tie breaker. Panther freshman Anna Kaplan had just tied the two sides up at four all in the No. 6 match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Biola freshman Lily Waterhouse, meaning Ross had to win the tie breaker in the third set to give Chapman the team victory. Ross and Swaney were the last two players on the court and the Panther rookie scored the final two points of the match to give Chapman its first victory of the 2018 season.

Chapman went up 2-1 after the doubles round as the freshman pair Isabella Oedekerk and Alisa Ogranovich won 8-2 in the No. 1 match and Ross and fellow freshman Anna Kaplan won 8-3 in the No. 3 match.

Oedekerk dropped her No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4, while Organovich won a thrilling come-from-behind 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 match over Eagles sophomore Tinisee Kandakai in the No. 3 match. Chapman saw losses in matches No. 4 and No. 5, as freshman Vasilisa Trofimova lost 6-3, 6-1 and junior Nicole Fouts lost 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, but the Panthers hung on to earn the one-point team victory.

Chapman heads back out to Lastinger Tennis Center on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. to take on Bates College.
