Ogranovich, Marino pull in major SCIAC awards

ORANGE, Calif. – On the strength of its best season in four years, the Chapman University women's tennis team headlined the All-SCIAC team, released today by the conference.

Freshman Alisa Ogranovich made history as the first Chapman women's tennis player to earn a major SCIAC award after being selected as the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. Head Coach Will Marino and the Panther coaching staff also made Chapman history, earning SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time in program history after posting a 10-8 record, the program's first winning record in four years, and earning a spot in the SCIAC Tournament.

Ogranovich moved her way up to the No. 1 spot in the Panthers' lineup early in the season, tallying a 7-4 record at the top spot. Overall, the newcomer posted a singles record of 15-7 to lead the way for Chapman. The Aliso Viejo native boasted a 5-4 singles record against SCIAC opponents and her 10-8 record at the No. 2 doubles court helped lead the Panthers to a spot in the conference postseason tournament with a No. 4 seed. Just last week, Ogranovich finished as the runner-up in singles play at the Ojai Tournament where she defeated three consecutive SCIAC opponent to reach the final match.

Coach Marino and his staff turned the women's tennis program around in just one year, posting a 10-8 overall record and using a lineup consisting of all freshmen to do so. The winning record was the program's first in four years. Marino led the team to a 4-3 SCIAC record and a No. 4 seed in the postseason tournament. Marino first SCIAC Coaching of the Year is his second career postseason honor. Before joining the SCIAC, Marino was selected as the 2010 ITA West Region Coach of the Year.

The Chapman women's tennis team was also voted the SCIAC Sportsmanship Team for the first time in program history.

The Panthers will travel to CMS for the SCIAC semifinal today at 1 p.m.
