Women’s tennis rolls past Haverford for first win of the season

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team rolled past the visiting Haverford Fords 8-1 in the first match of a mid-week doubleheader to earn its first victory of the 2019 season. The Panthers then fell 6-3 to NCAA Division II Dominican University of California in the evening match. Sophomore Alisa Ogranovich led the Panthers, going a perfect 4-0 on the day and winning the sole singles match against Dominican.

Game 1 – Chapman 8, Haverford 1

Chapman started off strong, sweeping the doubles courts. Ogranovich and fellow sophomore Madison Ross won 8-4 on the No. 1 court, while sophomore doubles partners Anna Kaplan and Naomi Lee won 8-5 on the No. 2 court. Senior Nicole Fouts and her sophomore doubles partner Vasilisa Trofimova rounded out the doubles matches, winning 8-5 on the third and final court.

Ogranovich made easy work of her opponent on the No. 1 court, taking the match 6-3, 6-3. Ross came back to take the second set on court No. 2 after falling early but could not spark a comeback in the 10-point tiebreaker, losing 1-6, 7-6, 0-1 (8-10).

Trofimova rolled past her opponent on the third court 6-2, 6-1, followed by a 6-2, 6-4 victory from Kaplan on the No. 4 court. Fouts beat her opponent 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 5 to help the Panthers and sophomore Delara Fotovatjah rolled past her opponent in the second set after a tough first set, eventually winning 7-6, 6-1 on the sixth and final court.

Game 2 – Dominican (Calif.) 6, Chapman 3

The Panthers took an early lead with a pair of doubles wins against the Penguins but went 1-5 in the singles portion of the match in the second match of their doubleheader.

Ogranovich won her fourth singles match in a row in the No. 1 match but accounted for the Panthers' only singles win. She breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the top of the singles lineup. Fotovatjah forced a third set in the No. 6 match but fell in the 10-point tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).

The Penguins won the other four matches in straight sets to capture the team win and complete the comeback.

In doubles, Ogranovich and Ross picked up their second win of the day with an 8-1 win at the top of the doubles lineup. Trofimova and Fouts followed in the No. 2 match with an 8-5 win to take the early advantage. Dominican salvaged a doubles point at No. 3.

The Panthers next take the court on Thursday at 1 p.m. against Division I Radford.
