Women's tennis takes opener 8-1

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team opened its dual season with an 8-1 win over visiting Marymount University of California on Tuesday. A pair of freshmen picked up their first collegiate dual wins.

Freshman Tatum Phillips made her debut in the No. 1 spot in the lineup and captured the 7-5, 6-0 win. Alliya Allyn, another freshman, made her debut at No. 4 and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Both also won their respective doubles matches, which Chapman swept.

Phillips and freshman Mary Williams won 8-2 on the No. 1 court while Allyn and freshman Liza Antonova won 8-1 on the No. 2 court. Juniors Madison Ross and Vasilisa Trofimova finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3.

Ross won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles while Trofimova overcame an early deficit to win 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4. Junior Anna Kaplan cruised on the No. 6 court to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The Panthers are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. to host NCAA Division I opponent UC Irvine.
