Rookie sprinter eyeing 100-meters record

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In just her second outing of the season, freshman sprinter Lauren Deats is already threatening the Panther record books as the Chapman University women's track and field team participated in the 17th Annual Rossi Relays hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday.

In her second collegiate race, Deats came within just .03 seconds of the school record with a time of 12.88 in the 100 meters, placing 16th out of 50 runners. Alongside Deats was freshman Baylor Hogan, posting a time of 13.55 in a meet that featured runners from Division I, II, III and NAIA schools.

Deats, Hogan, senior Peyton Collins and sophomore Chanelle Astrof bested last week's effort with a 4:25.38 mark in the 4x400 meter relay to finish in 13th place. Additionally, the distance medley relay consisting of Hogan, sophomore Nicole Jourdain, junior Kayla Heath and sophomore Lisa Peterkin finished with a time of 13:54.52, two seconds faster than Chapman's team last year at the Rossi Relays.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Astrof was Chapman's top finisher with a time of 17.57 which was 0.7 seconds off from her personal best.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #1 meet at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
