Ly completes digs trifecta with single-match record

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For all of the digs records Linda Ly owns at Chapman, there was one that had eluded her in her first three years on the Panthers' volleyball team. No more. The senior set a new school record with 53 digs in a five-match thriller with UMass-Boston on Saturday as part of the Pacific Coast Classic hosted by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Although Chapman lost the match, Ly eclipsed Shawna Parkinson's 13-year old mark of 50 digs set back in 1996.

Ly, a two-time All-Region selection and 2008 All-American at libero, now owns Chapman records for digs in a match, digs in a season and digs in her career. She's off to a torrid pace already this season, averaging over 7.7 digs per game through the Panthers' first five matches. Her school record of 6.6 digs per game was set in 2007.

Chapman (3-2) finished the season opening Pacific Coast Classic going 2-2 with wins over Occidental College and Fontbonne College (Mo.). The Panthers received some strong offensive play from senior OH Erin Leja, who recorded 14 or more kills in three of the four matches, including a career-high 22 kills against UMass-Boston.

On Tuesday night, Chapman climbed back above .500 with a five-set victory over host Occidental, winning the fifth game 17-15. Ly finished with 39 digs and senior Lyndsey Cargile led all hitters with 19 kills.
