Volleyball bounces back with win over Southwestern

ORANGE, Calif. - A night after dropping a tough five-game match to Pomona-Pitzer on its home court, the Chapman University volleyball team responded by defeating Southwestern (AZ) College in four sets 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-14 on Saturday night at the Hutton Sports Center.

Chapman (8-7) led for much of the match, particularly in the first, third and fourth games. The only time the Panthers faced a significant deficit was in the second game as the Eagles jumped out to a 9-5 lead, only to see that lead evaporate as Chapman went ahead 10-9 on a kill by freshman MB Lauren Crawford. The Eagles then responded by running off four straight points and then held the lead the rest of the way to win game two 25-18.

After losing the second game, the Panthers maintained the lead  for the entire third and fourth games, not trailing once.

Junior OH Kela Powers led the Chapman attack with 16 kills to go along with 12 digs. Senior OH Lyndsey Cargile finished the night with nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore L Alana Long finished with a game-high 23 digs, the second night in a row that she has had a game-high in digs in the absence of Linda Ly. Junior S Kat Kowalski finished with a game-high 41 assists.

For Southwestern (10-8), freshman OH Bethany Beckman finished with a team-high 16 kills and 17 digs.
