Volleyball sweeps its way through Pomona-Pitzer tourney

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team began its season in impressive fashion at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Friday and Saturday, winning all four matches without losing a single game.

The Panthers defeated Willamette University 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 and Lasell College 25-17, 25-15, 25-13 on Friday. They then closed out the tournament sweep on Saturday with a win over Augsburg College 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 and Centre College 25-22, 25-23, 25-21.

Both new and familiar faces stepped up for the Panthers in the four matches. Junior OH Ashleigh Gideon, a junior college transfer, came up big in first-career matches, leading the team in kills in three of the four matches. She had 21 kills in the first match of her career against Willamette. Against Centre, junior Kate Ferrin finished with 18 blocks and was the other Chapman player to lead the team in blocks. Sophomore S Corrine Ostrovsky totaled 173 assists over the weekend while senior L Alyssa Swatek led the team in digs in each match.

Chapman (4-0) next plays on Wednesday at Claremont before heading to the Posada Royale Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran next weekend.
